Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass) was recently called out for wanting to disarm the police departments’ variety of weapons including tear gas, rubber, plastic bullets, and bean bag rounds. Detroit Police Chief James Craig spoke with Martha MacCallum on Fox News where he shared a different viewpoint.
“When are we going to start talking about disarming criminals? I’ve been on the record. I support law-abiding citizens to be armed, but criminals? And so it’s OK to attack police officers and then everyone always says one thing. ‘These were peaceful protesters.’ So I guess when you throw Molotov cocktails, railroad spikes, other projectiles, using green lasers, I guess that constitutes being peaceful. We have never tried to stop folks from their right to free speech. We’ve been dealing with this for more than 100 days. Six instances where we’ve had to use force because they were either attacking us or they resisted a lawful arrest,” Chief Craig said.
Chief Craig also lashed out at the Democratic lawmakers for eroding the lack of accountability and urgency to investigate claims of excessive force. Members of the radical left are choosing to repeat a number of false claims in their proposals without verifying the facts.
Senator Markey is looking at introducing legislation to ban law enforcement’s use of tear gas and rubber bullets. In his letter, Markey talked about the streets being battlefields and how the police treat every protester like a criminal while they exercise their First Amendment rights. He said our militarized police forces are repressing the people like occupying armies and that “riot control agents” such as tear gas can cause serious bodily injury or death.
How is it that protesters can assault police officers with rocks, railroad spikes, and fireworks, but never once did a representative look into these cases of violent criminal activity? The left just wanted to point the finger at all police enforcement officers and claim they are compounding the effects of structural racism and suppressing all communities of color.
It’s a shame liberals refuse to respect the men and women in blue who put their lives on the line every day to protect us. Now, more than ever, people are realizing how important it is to have Mayors/Governors who are openly supportive of law and order policies. The ones who don’t are seeing their cities crash and burn.
We need more officers like Chief Craig stepping up and making public safety a priority, instead of just giving up and resigning. Chief Craig has earned the respect of his community and peers after an absolute mess. It’s time more officers stay strong and never yield to the ways of the radical left.
