Political leadership in Michigan is going down the drain. Michigan Mayor LeRoy Burcroff of Romulus, Michigan, is under fire after he recently admitted to using campaign funds to pay for an open bar at his daughter’s wedding. He acknowledged the $4,500 in campaign funds that he used to pay for a portion of the wedding and said he did not believe the funds were inappropriately used as people who worked on his campaign were at the event.
This isn’t the first time Mayor Burcroff has dipped into the campaign cash as his own personal piggy bank. Mayor Burcross also donated $15,000 at the Community United Methodist Church, bought a membership at the Belleville Yacht Club, and purchased a Jeep Wrangler with campaign funds, something that would surely upset state election regulators and political donors. While he has repaid the nearly $5,000 wedding expense to his campaign, the mayor said he won’t be paying back the Yacht membership or the Jeep Wrangler.
Burcroff’s attorney Daniel Wholihan sent a letter to the state acknowledging the use of the campaign funds to the church and his daughter’s wedding. He described the use of the funds as “poor optics” but did not agree that they violated any legal guidelines. He said that the funds were appropriate and argued that the wedding also doubled as a campaign event since many of the campaign workers attended the wedding. Doubled as a political event? How convenient.
Since earlier this year, Burcroff’s campaign has been under investigation by Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. Burcross promised to run an “integrity-driven leadership” when he was elected in November 2013 but has announced that he would not seek re-election next year.
Political laundering of campaign funds has become the “norm” way for politicians to become multimillionaires. They collect payoffs for political favors and use their campaign funds for daily living expenses.
But former Detroit Police Chief James Craig is fighting the scandals of Michigan with his expected GOP gubernatorial run. He is running against Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who has been plagued with scandals throughout her governorship and during the COVID-19 pandemic. She lied about the number of nursing home deaths in her state during COVID-19 and about a secret trip she took to Florida. Earlier this year, Whitmer even let a few of her staff members go on a Florida trip Spring Break vacation right after warning residents to avoid traveling unless necessary. “Do as I say, but not as I do, right?”
Craig shared his journey of becoming a Republican while talking to a campaign crowd and said that America shouldn’t be a monarchy ruled by kings or queens, adding that it ended back in 1776. He took a pro-Second Amendment and pro-life stance against the Michigan Democrats wanting to “defund our police, open up our borders to criminals, and silence dissenting voices.”
“I will never back down to liberal woke-ism and I’ll always stand up for what’s right despite intimidation and resistance from the woke mob and their Hollywood allies,” Craig said.
Craig blasted Democratic Reps. Maxine Waters and Rashida Tlaib for pushing a “victimhood mentality” in the state of Michigan, adding that the Democratic Party isn’t what it used to be.
Michigan’s desperate leadership is turning Detroit into the next Portland or Seattle, with crime running rampant and communities wishing for help. We need leaders that stand their ground and get the real work done, not dig into your pockets to pay for their open bar.
