Is Google Murdering Free Speech?

Google’s platform officially has too much power. They have backtracked amid backlash, but forced the conservative site ‘The Federalist’ to remove its comment section. This occurred after a far-left United Kingdom media watchdog accused the outlet of publishing “racist articles” about Black Lives Matter protests.

Amid the outrage over Google’s actions, the search engine claimed “The Federalist was never demonetized” and saying that the conservative outlet removes its comment in response to their threat.

The “two “far-right sites” ZeroHedge andThe Federalist will no longer be able to generate revenue from the advertisements served by Google Ads. They claimed the articles had Google profiting from unsubstantiated claims about the Black Lives Matter protests.

A Google spokesperson wrote to NBC News, “We have strict publisher policies that govern the content ads can run on and explicitly prohibit derogatory content that promotes hatred, intolerance, violence or discrimination based on race from monetizing. When a page or site violates our policies, we take action. In this case, we’ve removed both sites’ ability to monetize with Google.”

The news went on to report that The Federalist along with numerous other conservative American sites had been previously added to a blacklist for “Center for Countering Digital Hate. CCDH bragged of the defunding of these conservative sites which brought attention to Google in the first place and gave them the idea to do the same. That’s when Google joined the CCDH bandwagon to defund them as well.

Well Google went on to say that they never demonetized The Federalist at all. They simply got them to remove their comments section. In a tweet Google explained that they worked with The Federalist to address issues on their site related to “dangerous or derogatory content.” They also added “We offer guidance and best practices to publishers.” Alright, so Google wants to play editor as well then? Guess they should be regulated too.

The hypocrisy of large tech companies knows no bounds. They have been monetizing off of dangerous and derogatory content for years and should be embarrassed by all of their statements. Google wants to decide what is and isn’t appropriate content for the masses. What happened to free speech?

Google wanted to dominate the search business, dominate the ad business, and now dominate what you’re allowed to think. So, what’s next?
