Sixty-one percent of voters believe the country is heading “off on the wrong path” in the wake of President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address. A Yahoo! News/YouGov poll was released this week.

Only 25% of Americans believe the U.S. is heading in the right direction, while 61% say it’s “off on the incorrect track.” However, 50% of Democrats think the country is moving in the right direction under Biden. Nearly one-third (32%), however, feel it is going in the wrong direction. Another 18% remain unconvinced.

The majority of Republicans and Independents (86 percent and 68%, respectively) believe the country is on the wrong track. The survey also showed that Biden’s approval was down by two digits. 53 percent of respondents disapprove and 41 percent approve.

His approval rating on key issues like the Chinese coronavirus, which was a major selling point for his presidential campaign, has plummeted. 47% of those polled disapprove, compared with 44% who approve. It was a convenient decision by both the Democrat-led House of Representatives (and the White House) to lift their mask requirements before the SOTU address. This is likely to be a reaction to the souring polling results on this particular issue.

“I’m going to not be wearing a mask tonight,” Nancy Pelosi, House Speaker (D-CA), stated during a Tuesday appearance at MSNBC.

She added, “If I had small children or was around grandchildren with little kids, I would,” because not all of them were vaccinated.

The survey was conducted among 1,532 adults in the United States between February 24-27, 2022.
